Footage is an editor’s material. Footage will resist any attempt to subdue it, only revealing its true potential to editors who cooperate with it. Just as a carpenter cuts and carves wood considering the knots and grains, an editor must first recognise the essence of the footage. The material determines the creative process and the product and deserves to be discussed at length.
