THE TEACHER'S LOUNGE

DAS LEHRERZIMMER

2023 | DCP | Colour | 98’ | German, Turkish, Polish, English; Turkish subt. | Germany

İlker Çatak's new film “The Teacher's Lounge” portrays a school-scale model of society. Carla is a young high school math teacher. In the face of rising theft cases at her school, the administration increasingly blames the students for the criminal incidents. But Carla takes a stand against the administration when a Turkish student is accused of baseless allegations. She decides to set a trap for the thief in the teacher's lounge, where she leaves her jacket and laptop that is secretly recording. The person caught on camera is not a student, but this discovery exacerbates the issue rather than solving it because Carla's unauthorised recording violates personal privacy. This puts students, teachers, and parents in a heated debate. On the other hand, the student newspaper represents free press that reports on the events impartially. Co-written by Çatak and Johannes Duncker, the gripping and thrilling screenplay deals with the situation in all its dimensions.
