We are witnessing a revival in documentary filmmaking over the recent years. As long-format documentaries meet their audiences at movie theaters; TV stations, streaming services and festivals allocate more and more slots to documentaries. A major factor that plays into this revival are the new forms of storytelling. Docs have distanced themselves from the authoritarian tone that they had used in a way to persuade their viewers. They have now opened space to subjective and distinct perspectives. Living in the post-truth era, what’s the relationship of cinema with truth? Does an ethical approach contradict with irony? What are the differences between non-fiction and fiction? Is it possible to utilize archival resources in a creative way? The Ayvalık International Film Festival panel, which will accompany its documentary selection, will seek answers to these questions.
