Turkish delight is one of the symbols of Turkish cuisine, and according to some sources, it has been made in Anatolia since the 15th century. The Greeks call this famous confectionary “lokumi”, which was derived from the Arabic “rāhat-al hulqūm” or “throat soother” in the Ottoman period. It became known as “Turkish Delight” in most Western countries in the 19th century, a period of nationalist movements. Using many images on a split screen, Pınar Öğrenci tells the story of Turkish delight production and its relationship with the history of two families estranged more than a century ago. The focus of the story is the forced displacement of two Greek families who escaped from Izmir and Istanbul during the War of Independence and took refuge on the island of Syros, but the film also deals with the transformation of Turkish delight into a profession for the refugees who were removed from their homeland and the importance it carries in the struggle for survival of two separate couples from different generations.
