Inheritance law enforced by Sharia courts in Jordan forces women to transfer the rights of deceased family members to male relatives. Nawal is one of many women faced with this daunting problem after her husband's unexpected death, and the brother-in-law soon lays claim to the house occupied by Nawal and her daughter. There is only one solution for the woman to avoid eviction: she must lie to the court about her pregnancy. Nawal and her daughter can live in the family house if the newborn is a boy.
Screened during the Critics' Week programme at Cannes this year, Amjad Al Rasheed's first feature film returned from the festival with two awards and promises to be one of the most acclaimed releases in the upcoming awards season. Inshallah a Boy tells the story of how nurse Nawal met the affluent Lauren. The film is an impressive account of solidarity between two women and reveals the oppression and violence women face in a patriarchal society, regardless of class.
