Since the sixties, Ken Loach has always stood by the oppressed with his historical and contemporary stories. His latest and last film, The Old Oak, deals with the cause and effects of racism Syrian refugees face in Europe.
The film begins with a group of refugees being resettled in a former mining town in northeast England. The town has dwindled economically after the closure of the mines, also tarnishing the protest spirit of its inhabitants. As the locals lose their livelihood, they come to believe that the problem lies in their new neighbours. Rumours and disinformation amplify the conflict and racist sentiments. Still, thankfully, reason prevails among some residents, like TJ, the owner of The Old Oak Pub, one of the last places that preserves the town's character. This pub may be the only place that can unite these polarised people even though they come from the same working class.
