Eddie Felson, a great pool player, travels from city to city with his partner Charlie, making a living from small-time hustles. The duo earn money thanks to Eddie's talent at the table as much as his abilities as a performer to hide this talent from his opponents. But Eddie has an appetite for more. In New York, he challenges Minnesota Fats, a billiard legend who has never lost a game. In this prolonged game, Eddie's biggest adversary is not his opponent but his ambition.
Newman was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in this film but did not win; however, the revival of the same character twenty-five years later in Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money finally got him the Oscar.
On the occasion of his post-humous book Erguvani Istimbot, we commemorate journalist/writer Cüneyt Cebenoyan with one of his favorite films.
