After eight years of silence, Michel Gondry's first feature film focuses on creativity and the obstacles before it. Inspired by the problems he ran into while filming Mood Indigo / L'écume des jours a decade ago, The Book of Solutions is a comedy/drama about filmmaking and unfinished titles.
Despite his success as a commercial and feature film director, Marc's career has reached a dead-end. He can't complete his new film, which is burning a hole in his pocket. Ultimately, the producers decide to remove him from the project. So, Marc steals material from the studio in cahoots with his sympathetic editor, Charlotte and devoted assistant, Sylvia. As a last resort, the team takes refuge in a country house owned by Marc's aunt to complete the final cut. However, the process is prolonged because Marc refuses to watch the film. On the other hand, village life turns out to be inspiring for Marc, and he begins to collect his new ideas as aphorisms in a 'Book of Solutions'.
Premiering in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, The Book of Solutions contains all the quintessential traits of Michel Gondry's cinematic style. This journey into the mind of a bipolar director is naïve yet sophisticated, entertaining yet dramatic.
