Derviş Zaim's new film Tavuri is a unique documentary that deals with the themes of crime and crime addiction, society and marginality, freedom and captivity through one of his childhood friends in Famagusta, Mustafa Serttaş, a.k.a. the Devil (Tavuri), who spent half his life behind bars for theft and fraud.
Mustafa grew up in a poor and broken family in Cyprus and started stealing from a very young age. Over time, this habit turned into a kind of addiction. Even prison did not stop this man from hustling, making him a criminal legend.
Derviş Zaim succeeds in developing compassion for his old friend, whom he has known since the age of eight. The director filmed Mustafa over the last five years, trying to understand him while reflecting on his own past through ‘Tavuri’. This might be Zaim’s second most touching film character in his filmography since Mahsun from Tabutta Rövaşata / Somersault in a Coffin.
