Competing for the Golden Lion at Venice last year, Rebecca Zlotowski's Other People's Children has been described by film critic Peter Bradshaw as “a gentle, heartfelt relationship drama about - and for - intelligent adults” in The Guardian.
Rachel is a high school teacher who has no children. She might be content with her life, but she quickly likes Leila, the younger daughter of her recently divorced new boyfriend, Ali. Rachel might be trying to conceive, but her motherly instincts go beyond Leila; she feels the same about one of her students performing poorly at school and also her newborn niece.
With a poignant storyline including realistic observations about life, the film asks: Do you have to give birth to a child, or is motherly love felt for other people’s children equally worthy?
