Jafar Panahi continues to make films in ingenious ways, despite all the obstacles, travel bans, and repeated arrests the Iranian government has used to silence him. Premiering at last year's Venice Film Festival in competition for the Golden Lion, No Bear is an example of metacinema that focuses on the filmmaking process. Panahi produced his new film that was shot in Turkey with remote directives. The fictional story starring Panahi as himself takes place in a village close to the Iranian-Turkish border that finds itself divided over a row. A young couple allegedly goes against the village traditions, and the proof of the incident is a photograph on Panahi's camera. The director tries desperately to help the young lovers, but the village elders turn increasingly oppressing and threatening. There is another storyline as well, focusing on Bahtiyar and Zara, who fled Iran years ago, took refuge in Turkey, and are now trying to reach Europe illegally. They are the protagonists of Panahi’s new film which is in production in Turkey. No Bear is a film in which reality and fiction are constantly intertwined in a clever storyline. Panahi also questions his position as a storyteller and the artist's ethical responsibilities.
