Muvaffak 'Maffy' Falay’s life changed after meeting Dizzy Gillespie, who was in Ankara for a concert in 1956, making him one of Turkey’s best jazz musicians. Compared by Gillespie to Roy Eldridge and Miles Davis, the young trumpet player toured Europe in the 60s, playing in major orchestras before settling in Sweden in 1965. To make this portrait documentary, director Deniz Yüksel Abalıoğlu visited Maffy in Stockholm before his death in February 2022 at the age of ninety-one. Living in a small suburban apartment, Maffy preferred to forget everything other than his old musician friends. Sometimes fondly and sometimes a little bitterly, he mourned the old days and his beloved jazz culture. Abalıoğlu captures Maffy’s last live performance and the memories hidden in his collection of records, CDs, notepads, photographs and newspaper clippings found in his apartment.
Sibel Köse and Kürşad Deniz will perform live in concert after the film screening at ASKEV.
