Previously portrayed in other feature films, Madame du Barry was born in 1743 as Jeanne Bécu, the illegitimate child of a seamstress. Jeanne is an intelligent child, eager to read and learn, but social prejudices haunt her mother and the young woman. Jeanne is beautiful, which means they are soon put on the doorstep in every house they manage to find work in. In desperation, Jeanne starts working as a courtesan when she turns twenty and soon wins the admiration of nobility with her cultured disposition. It is not long before King Louis XV hears about Jeanne, and she suddenly finds herself in Versailles, however, a place in the palace requires her to marry a nobleman. Jeanne is loathed by the women in the palace when she makes a fake marriage to Count Guillaume du Barry to cover her role as Louis XV's chief royal mistress.
Maïwenn, directing and starring as Jeanne du Barry herself, portrays the famous ‘maîtresse-en-titre’ as a rebel who challenged the hypocrisy of the courtiers, a fashion icon who rewrote the rules and a trendsetter.
