Marking its centenary, Director Gülsel Özkan’s documentary Sıla Hasreti is about the population exchange between the Turkish and Greek communities and is dedicated to “all the refugees who died before they could see their homeland one last time”. Starting with the Balkan Wars, the film provides an accurate account of this incident through interviews with Greek and Turkish historians specialising in the subject and the descendants of the families from both sides. These heart-breaking stories are accompanied by footage from the live performance of Göç Senfonisi: Karanlık Sular / Migration Symphony: Dark Waters, composed by Fuat Saka and orchestrated by Vangelis Zografos. As the home of a sizeable refugee population, Ayvalık is one of the many towns Özkan visits in the film.
