Kaouther Ben Hania's Four Sisters is a documentary about mother Olfa and her daughters. Through the main characters, the film portrays the lack of love, and unwavering violence handed down from generation to generation in patriarchal societies like Tunisia.
Growing up in a cruel environment, Olfa has been forced into an arranged marriage with pressure from her family. Subject to physical violence from her husband on their wedding night, Olfa believes that a similar degree of force is necessary to protect her daughters from the outside world. Every man who enters their lives and every shift in their country amplifies the shocks Olfa and her daughters have to endure. Ultimately, Olfa loses her daughters while trying to protect them, with the two eldest daughters running away from home to join ISIS in Libya.
The film is a blend of documentary and fiction in which professional actors play Olfa's daughters, who joined ISIS. Olfa and her youngest girls appear as themselves. Director Kaouther Ben Hania brings the terrorising stories of five women and many more with interviews and re-enactments.
