Aki Kaurismäki's twentieth full-length film Fallen Leaves is a tragicomic love story set in the Finnish director's peculiar universe. Typically workingclass, supermarket worker Ansa and construction worker Holappa coincidentally meet at a karaoke bar. Both live rather bleak lives: Ansa is fired for taking expired products home instead of disposing of them whereas Holappa is an alcoholic who can't stop drinking. But, similar to his previous films, Kaurismäki sees a glimmer of hope for the future of this couple. Despite all the difficulties the main characters have to endure, Fallen Leaves works towards a finale that will make the audience feel good. The director resorted to his trademark minimal designs, artificial lights, rock music and Finnish tango, brief and
to-the-point lines, and of course, the deadpan acting in this film, too.
