Somnur Vardar’s Drifting is a documentary that was produced over six years. Starting as a project during Istanbul’s aggressive construction boom, the documentary is screened at the festival during an economic crisis and extreme housing problems. Through two young men, Ferhat, a teacher from Mardin waiting to be appointed, and his cousin Emrah, who wants a university degree, Vardar follows the lives of construction workers on-site and in their dormitories. For the duo, the only way out of this line of work is to save up dollars by working on a construction project in Algeria. But, as a friend keeps reminding them, construction is a vicious circle that affects generations. It is an industry costing workers’ lives and destroying the city.
