Acclaimed Italian director Giovanni is never in a rush to shoot films. Obsessive and ritualistic by nature, he dislikes changing his habits. For example, watching Jacques Demy’s Lola before the first shooting day of each new title with his musician daughter and his wife, who has produced all of his films, is his ‘totem’. Otherwise, everything can go wrong, and he will not care. The production of his pessimistic and expensive new film about the impact of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution on the Italian Communist Party is no exception. The lives and expectations of the people around Giovanni are not what they used to be. His daughter has grown up and is in a relationship with a man old enough to be her father. His wife, who is producing another director's film for the first time, is determined to leave him. Giovanni is also finding it difficult to adapt to the new rules of the industry and contemporary cinema, so he puts up a fight. Unsurprisingly, Nanni Moretti plays the leading role of Giovanni, who claims reconciliation with the past and the present is the only way to a brighter future.
