With the visual aesthetic of a comic book, a symmetrical mise-enscène, painting-like compositions, a star-studded cast, and an absurd sense of humor, The Phoenician Scheme brings together all the familiar elements of Wes Anderson’s cinema. This time, however, the director pushes the fragmented narrative style of his recent films even further. The story follows a father, a ruthless businessman, and his daughter, a nun, reunited after years apart on a peculiar adventure. What begins as a journey to meet potential investors for a project gradually transforms into an episodic spy film, making the viewer feel increasingly lost in the twists and turns of the story.
Wes Anderson is one of the most visually distinctive filmmakers of our time. Even a single frame from his films is recognizable by his signature style. Contrary to what some claim, however, Anderson does not simply repeat himself in each new work, but instead continues to refine his filmmaking characteristics to perfection. The Phoenician Scheme stands as the latest chapter in the mature phase of his cinema.
