Adapted from Stephen King’s short story of the same title, The Life of Chuck is a remarkably faithful adaptation of the original text. The film is structured in three sections told in reverse chronological order. The first part, set in the present day, unfolds through the perspective of Marty, a high school teacher, as we witness extraordinary events and their devastating consequences occurring across the world: natural disasters, the collapse of the internet, endless traffic jams, entire US states destroyed and a wave of migration. As fears grow stronger that the world is coming to an end, a billboard catches Marty’s attention. Soon, everyone around him is speaking about the same ad: “Charles Krantz: 39 Great Years! Thanks, Chuck!” In the subsequent sections, the film moves backward in time, gradually revealing the mystery that connects Chuck to these people.
Although The Life of Chuck revolves around deeply dark themes, ultimately, it will be most remembered for its dance sequences, affirming a love for life. Notably, Stephen King, who is rarely satisfied with adaptations of his work, gave his full approval to Flanagan’s film — not his first King adaptation.
