Strange Abandoned Deranged tells the absurd story of a holiday resort. Once one of the most popular destinations of the 1990s and a frequent retreat for politicians, Naturland has long left behind its glamorous days and now lies in abandonment. In this film, director Ceylan Özgün Özçelik — known for both documentaries and fiction — blends the two forms to open cinematic channels between the site’s past and present.
Through fictional characters brought to life by actors such as Hasibe Eren, Tuğrul Tülek, and Damla Sönmez, the sensational history of the resort is woven into an unsettling atmosphere. With a playful cinematographic approach to its architecture, originally designed around an “eco-friendly” concept, the film reveals how a utopia turns into a dystopia, drawing connections between place and memory, consumption and ruin, state and politics.
