What if Tarkovsky were to make a film on techno music? What would a cinematic fusion of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 action-thriller masterpiece The Wages of Fear and the “Mad Max” series look like? Director Oliver Laxe’s Sirât is poised to ignite such extraordinary questions, and more. Besides its remarkable references to previous works, this is essentially a profoundly spiritual film, leading the viewer to deep reflections on what it means to live and exist.
Luis, in pursuit of his missing daughter, heads to a “desert rave” in Morocco in the company of his younger son, only to find himself on a perilous journey where things get increasingly out of his control.
Avoid any spoilers, for this is a film full of relentless surprises. Much like the techno music that has inspired it, Sirât slowly builds tension before striking down with an unexpected blow, its rhythm unfolding like a perfectly calculated DJ set. As the characters gradually detach from reality, they set on a spiritual odyssey, brought vividly to life through Kangding Ray’s music and Mauro Herce’s mesmerizing cinematography.
With its immersive visual and sonic landscape, Sirât is a film that demands nerves of steel, the largest screen possible, and, above all, maximum volume.
