Despite his doubts, Altay wants to extend his visa in order to continue living in Germany. At the immigration office, he receives a clear response: to remain in the country, he must provide a reason. What is meant as a purely bureaucratic question pushes Altay to reflect on why he does what he does. This difficult process sends him into the streets, talking with people. In Neukölln, one of Berlin’s neighborhoods with a large immigrant population, he notices someone wearing a Spiderman mask. He approaches the man, asks for permission, and begins interviewing him the next day.
Neukölln Spiderman is a documentary inspired by director Altay Erlik’s own story, posing fundamental questions about life itself. Following the first interview, Erlik continues to ask these questions to other fascinating figures around him, bringing together these unique personalities in a shared cinematic universe. Through the use of animation and visual effects, this chance universe takes on a distinctive form. Neukölln Spiderman is a dynamic film that combines existential inquiry with vibrant portraits of humanity
