The earthquakes of February 6 devastated dozens of cities in Turkey and Syria, and their impact continues to be felt. The destruction caused by the disaster has not only paralyzed daily life but also completely transformed the priorities of the locals. In this turmoil, young people in the region find themselves forced to focus on the looming university entrance exam, even as they grieve loved ones they haven’t even been able to bury yet.
In Exam on the Edge of Time, İlkay Nişancı follows the lives of young people in Hatay after February 6, confronting the stark realities of the university exam system from perhaps a most extreme angle. The film focuses on the determination of students who see the exam as a chance to rise from the ruins of the past, and also on the tireless efforts of their teachers. This is an outstanding documentary, portraying how hope — one of humanity’s most powerful forces — stands against the indifference of the system.
