Private Life, written and directed by Rebecca Zlotowski, features Jodie Foster in a French-speaking leading role. Lilian, an American psychiatrist living in Paris, finds her life thrown into chaos when one of her patients commits suicide. The patient’s grieving husband blames her for the death, while the patient’s daughter keeps appearing at her door, determined to uncover certain secrets about her mother. Lilian has always tried to make rational decisions, never straying from scientific facts, and has relied on emotional restraint as her main defense mechanism. Yet here she is, drawn into a mystery touched by the supernatural. Is it really a suicide or a murder case? And if so, who is the murderer?
Private Life has earned Foster widespread acclaim for her performance. She is joined by French cinema’s stars, including Daniel Auteuil, Mathieu Amalric, and Virginie Efira. Reminiscent of the psychological thrillers of the 1990s with a twist ending, the film is enriched by a subtle sense of humor.
