In Morocco, women who sing traditional songs are known as Sheikha. For a sheikha, music is not merely a commercial endeavour but a form of resistance—a rebellion that transforms a scream into melody, defying the oppression of women. Passionate about singing, Touda dreams of one day going to Casablanca to become a sheikha and earn respect. But for now, she must sing pop songs in nightclubs to provide for her son, whom she raises alone in a small town. Neither constant harassment and sexual assaults from men nor the prejudices of her family, nothing can deter Touda from her dream. Perhaps the best melodramas are those where female protagonists turn their talents into weapons against social pressures and Touda expresses her accumulated anger through songs as well. Her voice becomes an act of defiance in one striking scene where she refuses to be silenced, even in the face of physical intervention. Director Nabil Ayouch and the star of the film, Nisrin Erradi, portray together an emotional resistance that resonates deeply and feels familiar.
