Absent opens with Mert, an amusement park worker, posing a series of existential questions to his colleague: “Is there another you inside?” and “So you think, you are in control then?” The confident response—”Yeah, who else would have it?”—isn’t quite as clear-cut for Mert himself. By the looks of things, these questions don’t seem to be an issue judging by the concrete answers the world has given. However, his caricature drawn at the amusement park, the images captured on some old tapes, and an unexpected visitor who comes by, all hint that Mert’s suspicions may be true. Yet, what does it mean precisely to ‘have another you inside’–if there is one? We need to imagine what it means rather than knowing what it means. Cem Demirer’s short film imagines that.
