About the event
This year’s screening of Soundtrack to a Coup d’État is the inspiration for this conversation. The film, which portrays the 1960 Congo coup and the colonial dynamics of the period through archival images and jazz music, has been widely acclaimed, demonstrating that a powerful film can be produced almost entirely from archival material. This is why we have included another film in the same vein, Cem Kaya’s Love, Deutschmarks and Death, first screened in Ayvalık Film Festival in 2022, now having a rerun in this year’s program. The screening will be followed by a discussion between director Cem Kaya and film critic Engin Ertan on the process of making films with archival footage and the role of music in that process.
